Journal of Teaching Disability Studies Releases 2nd Issue

The CUNY School of Professional Studies (CUNY SPS) is pleased to announce the release of the second issue of the Journal of Teaching Disability Studies, a peer-reviewed academic journal of disability studies pedagogy developed and edited by the CUNY SPS disability studies program.  

 “We are extremely proud to launch the second issue of the Journal of Teaching Disability Studies, the only peer-reviewed publication that promotes original research about disability studies pedagogy, and provides a space of experimentation, dialogue, and collaboration for those of us who teach about disability and disability studies across a variety of educational settings,” said Dr. Mariette Bates, academic director of the CUNY SPS disability studies programs, who serves on the journal’s editorial board. “Our second issue offers a number of insightful and fascinating submissions that continue and expand upon many of the conversations we began in our first issue about the ways that disability studies can fit into the classroom, curriculum, and educational programming.” 

The second issue of the JTDS, which is freely available online through the CUNY Academic Commons, features an introduction by Dr. Bates and seven articles exploring a range of topics within the field by authors from universities throughout North America.

Several of the articles focus on how disabilities studies can be effectively incorporated within specific educational settings, including physical therapist education, high school history classes, and teacher preparation courses. Other articles highlight broader pedagogical issues, including the ways that disability studies can help critique and reform higher education, the relationship between universal design for learning and disability studies, and the steps educators can take to make programs more inclusive of students with disabilities. A final article offers a first-hand account of two teachers/scholars who share their own learning disability experiences. 

To celebrate the journal’s second issue, the editors are hosting the online event JTDS: An Insider’s Look at the New Issue on Thursday, February 18. During this hour-long talk, some of the authors from the new issue will discuss their research and answer questions from the audience. 

Speakers will include Dr. Lisa Boskovich from Chapman University, Dr. Brad Toland from University of Alabama, and Dr. Andrew Lucchesi from Western Washington University. Dr. Bates and Professor Matthew Conlin, a CUNY SPS alum and managing editor of the Journal of Teaching Disability Studies, will moderate the discussion. Register for the talk here.
