New Scholarship Launched for Fall 2024 Medical Coding Certificate Students
The CUNY School of Professional Studies (CUNY SPS) is proud to announce a new $103,000 scholarship fund for its Medical Coding Certificate students in partnership with the New York County Health Services Review Organization Inc. (NYCHSRO) and its subsidiary MedReview Inc.
This initiative is designed to support the next generation of medical coding professionals, essential to the healthcare industry's financial and operational integrity. The NYCHSRO/MedReview scholarship will benefit about 20 students and provide them with financial support to cover tuition and fees.
MedReview is a leading authority in ensuring payment integrity and coding proficiency within the healthcare sector.
Applicants will be eligible for this scholarship beginning Fall 2024, which is aimed at funding the education and certification of students who demonstrate academic excellence and a keen interest in the auditing aspect of medical coding.
“The NYCHSRO/MedReview Medical Coding Scholarship will be a transformative opportunity for learners to earn an industry-recognized credential that leads directly to well-paid careers in the fast-growing medical coding sector," said CUNY SPS Chief Academic Officer Jennifer Sparrow. "I am delighted to have had the opportunity to collaborate with NYCHSRO/MedReview to create this innovative higher education pathway that addresses the needs of the medical coding field."
“We are delighted to be working in partnership with an institution of the academic distinction and social purpose of CUNY SPS. Giving back is a part of our mission and providing the opportunity for a high paying career in healthcare to potentially underserved students is extremely fulfilling” said Dr. Michael R. McGarvey, NYCHSRO board chairman.
The scholarship will be awarded in four installments, designed to support students throughout their academic journey, from their first semester to the completion of Certified Coding Specialist (CCS exam) after successfully completing the program. This structured financial aid aims to remove barriers to education and certification, enabling students to pursue successful careers in medical coding and auditing.
In addition to scholarships, the partnership between MedReview and CUNY SPS will include internships, curriculum development focused on auditing, and potential employment opportunities for graduates, reflecting a comprehensive approach to professional development in healthcare.
"We are very thankful to NYCHSRO for their generosity and support to the medical coding certificate program," said Dr. Memory Ndanga, academic director of the Health Information Management and Medical Coding programs. "The scholarship will make a big difference in our students’ lives and allows them to concentrate on completing their studies."
