Jan Oosting, PhD, RN, is an Associate Professor of Nursing at the CUNY School of Professional Studies. Her clinical background is in pediatric intensive care and she completed her PhD at The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. Her research interests include vulnerable populations of children in the healthcare system, including gender fluid and transgender children, children of incarcerated mothers, and children in an ICU setting.

Translanguaging in the Undergraduate Nursing Classroom: An Educational Innovation

Assistant Professor of Nursing Dr. Jan Oosting recently published "Translanguaging in the Undergraduate Nursing Classroom: An Educational Innovation" in the Journal of Nursing Education. The article highlights a study on the positive impact of translanguaging in an undergraduate nursing classroom. Translanguaging, a pedagogical practice that allows students to use their strongest written language for assignments, was successfully piloted in a nursing elective course at CUNY SPS. Three students participated in the initiative and reported that the experience was empowering and enhanced their writing. The study suggests that nursing educators (and others) should consider incorporating translanguaging in their courses to support linguistic diversity and improve student engagement and comprehension in academic settings.

The CIED recognized a cohort of faculty and staff who had committed themselves to an intensive EDI training regimen through LinkedIn Learning. Those who completed the multiple training modules were distinguished as “EDI Ambassadors” by the CIED and earned a special certification badge.EDI Ambassadors Trevaughn Bynum-Ortiz, the academic program specialist for the online Business programs, Rinchen (Rin) Lama, human resources coordinator, and Jan Oosting, assistant professor of Nursing programs, share their insights after completing EDI coursework earlier this year.
