Karla Herrera

Karla Vanessa Herrera is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over ten years of experience in community development. Karla graduated from the Silberman School of Social Work. Her major method was Group Work with a focus on immigration, children, youth, and families. Karla has served in a number of community-based organizations where her focus was on the social and emotional development of participants through a group work lens. Currently, she is working in an outpatient mental health clinic dealing with trauma. Karla utilizes aspects of Meaning-Centered Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy to address symptoms of trauma-related mental health diagnoses.
Karla is a member of the International Association for Social Work with Groups (IASWG), where she serves as a board member at large. She is also co-chair of the IASWG New York Red Apple Chapter. In that role, Karla has hosted a number of events focusing on fostering and building community amongst practitioners and scholars interested in learning more about social group work theory and how to apply it. In addition, Karla has had the opportunity to present at annual IASWG symposia Most recently in Madrid, Spain, in June of 2024. The focus of the presentation was on the use of the Problem Solving Process in an Eco-Social Group.
