Sherry Teitelbaum

Sherry Teitelbaum ('11) has spent thirty-five years in the theatre as a director, dramaturg, actress, acting coach, teaching artist, and adapter of works for the stage. She co-founded two NYC theater companies: Playing for Keeps, a women’s theater collective, and Theater in Action, a not-for-profit repertory company. She has directed over 70 productions Off-Broadway and regionally. She is a member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, as well as an alumna of the Lincoln Center Theater Directors Lab. Since receiving her MA in Applied Theatre at CUNY SPS in 2011, Sherry has explored three new threads in her work: community-based advocacy through the arts, coaching individual writers to discover and develop their own voice, and teaching on the college and graduate level as an Adjunct Instructor. She taught early college students at Hostos Community College for six years, where she created a unique Public Speaking curriculum that utilized theater games to teach fundamentals of persuasive speech and allay performance anxiety. She also co-taught the capstone Thesis 1 course in the CUNY SPS MA in Applied Theatre program for three years. Her pioneering work to generate opportunities for older adults to explore their histories through theater has garnered grants from the Manhattan Community Arts Fund, the Fund for Creative Communities, and the Queens Arts Fund. Her academic work has been published in Research in Drama Education and her creative writing in the private collection Flowlines. Currently she has branched into autofiction and is working on a collection of Provincetown-based short stories.
