Nurse informatics specialists play a crucial role in all healthcare environments as they are charged with ensuring that the best available scientific data and technology are available to design and implement plans for patient care. Informatics nurses use, integrate, and analyze technology to make changes in nursing practice, advance health outcomes, and facilitate research and education.
The online Advanced Certificate in Nursing Informatics is an 18-credit program that gives nurses the additional knowledge and practice needed to expand their expertise within this specialized field.
In addition to a practicum component, the program explores content in:
- Management of decision support and health information systems
- Project management, systems analysis, and design for quality patient outcomes
- Nursing informatics applications for education, research, quality management, patient care, and evidence-based practice
Career Scope and Academic Prospects
The American Medical Informatics Association estimated that up to 70,000 health informatics specialists will be needed across the healthcare system over the next several years.
According to the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), nearly half of nurse informaticists indicated having a salary of over $100,000 in 2017, which is a 13% increase from the salaries reported in 2014. Additionally, 53% of nurse informaticists with a post-graduate degree earned over $100,000 compared to the 37% of nurses who only held a bachelor’s degree.
Graduates of the Advanced Certificate in Nursing Informatics are prepared for a number of employment opportunities such as Clinical Informatics Nurse, Informatics Nurse Specialist, Director of Clinical Informatics, and RN Clinical Applications Coordinator as well as the American Nurses Credentialing Center Informatics Nursing Certification Examination.
