Change Warriors FAQ

Currently, the Change Warriors program does not have partnerships with any organizations to place you at a volunteer site. You are responsible for finding your own volunteer opportunities. We can provide resources on volunteer organizations and websites. For additional help finding volunteer opportunities, please contact Elizabeth Navarro, Student Life College Assistant, at elizabeth.navarro@cuny.edu.

Volunteer work is an act of service you voluntarily commit to for the sole purpose of giving back your time. If you receive compensation, such as monetary payment, academic credit, a stipend, or material gifts it will not be considered volunteer work.

No, you do not have to choose a volunteer site or activity that correlates with your major. The goal of the program is for you to increasing your awareness of and explore different cause areas and social issues.

Yes, completing training or attending orientation for your volunteer site counts as volunteer hours.

No, extensions and transferring your hours to the next semester is not permitted. This is because you won't meet the deadline to be recognized at the ceremony. You can reapply for the program for the next semester.

No, if a volunteer service you signed up for gets cancelled, you cannot count it as volunteer hours because the event did not take place, and therefore, you did not volunteer.

If a volunteer service you signed up for ends earlier than expected, you may record the hours you signed up for. If you have spoken to the team leader or supervisor present and they do not have additional work for you, you may leave and record the hours you signed up for.

No, being a part of a club, Student Association, Governing Council, or Urban Male Scholars here at CUNY SPS does not count as volunteer service.

Yes, attending workshops can count as volunteer hours if you are signed up as a Lex Change Warrior or Student Life Change Warrior. There are limits to how many workshops you can use as volunteer service. If you are signed up as a Lex Change Warrior, you are limited to two workshops. If you are signed up as a Student Life Change Warrior, you are limited to four workshops.

You must inform Elizabeth Navarro at least one day prior to the workshop if you intend to use it as volunteer hours so we can notify the facilitator of your attendance.

During a virtual workshop hosted on Zoom:

• Your camera must be on throughout the workshop.
• You must actively participate by answering the presenter’s questions (verbally or in the chat), responding to peers in the chat, and reacting by liking messages.

After the workshop, you must submit a 250-word reflection within three days of the workshop date.
